Understanding Modern Slot Mechanics

Modern slot machines use sophisticated mathematical systems to create their gameplay. Our mechanics library explains every system in detail so you can understand exactly how each title works.

Developed by Big Time Gaming (BTG), Megaways is a licensed reel modifier that dynamically changes the number of symbols on each reel with every spin. Reels typically display between 2–7 symbols, generating up to 117,649 ways to win. The mechanic is now licensed to dozens of studios including Pragmatic Play, Red Tiger, and Blueprint Gaming.
Cluster Pays replaces traditional paylines with a system where wins are formed by groups of matching symbols that touch horizontally or vertically. Typically used on 6×6 or 8×8 grids, this mechanic is common in titles like Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza, often combined with tumbling/cascading features.
After a winning combination, the winning symbols are removed and new symbols fall into the vacant positions — creating potential chain reaction wins from a single paid spin. Multipliers often increase with each cascade, significantly impacting the math model and maximum win potential.
A bonus feature where landing a set number of scatter symbols (typically money bags or coins) triggers a re-spin round. Collected symbols lock in place, and the feature continues until no new symbols land. The goal is to fill the grid or hit special symbols like Jackpot awards.
An optional paid feature that lets players skip the base game and immediately access the bonus round at a predetermined cost — typically 50–200× the base bet. While this improves short-term accessibility to high-variance bonus rounds, the RTP of the feature buy is mathematically the same as triggering it organically.
